A shared Vision is a powerful tool in uniting people under common purpose, so their actions reinforce each other’s more often, moving the organization smoothly towards its future. It the organization’s answer to the question: “How will the world be better when we have succeeded?”
A shared Vision is more than just agreed-upon words; it is a succinct description the desired endstate which taps people’s intuitive ability to prioritize and overcome short-term complexities. It provides employees and stakeholders long-term guidance which is specific enough to be desirable and general enough to capture their imaginations, a necessary skill they will use when identifying creative solutions to the intractable problems hindering your success.
The power of a good Vision stems from its ability to describe a truly meaningful endstate so that those who share it want it; and they want it not just for themselves, but for others. This sense of greater purpose provides employees incentive to give a little bit of extra of themselves on and off the clock; to use good judgment when dealing with customers, prospects and other audiences; and for stakeholder champions to include your organization’s interests with their own. It is your organization’s save the world message narrowed down to the specific piece of the world only you can save.
What characterizes a motivating Vision Statement?
Vision statements:
- are idealistic and remain accurate for 10+ years;
- explicitly state the aspirations of the people in the organization for furthering a higher purpose beyond just the organization’s survival;
- identify the impacts of the organization’s work on the world at large;
- are unique and authentic to the organization;
- “feel right” to the point where employees and stakeholders can internalize it and explain it with conviction and enthusiasm in their own words; and
- are written in plain English (no marketing lingo).
